Garden Of Greek Civilisation And Culture

The CENTRE FOR HELLENISM DAMIANOS FOUNDATION has completed the First Entity of its Garden of Greek Civilisation and Culture that consists of the following thematic units:

  • Ancient Greek Lyric Poetry.
  • Ancient Greek Drama.
  • Ancient Greek Philosophy.
  • Asclepius (Aesculapius) God of Medicine and Ancient Greek and Byzantine Medicine.
  • Panhellenic Athletic and Music Games: Olympic Games, Pythian, Nemean, Isthmian Games.
  • Demigods and Heroes: Hercules, Theseus, Jason and the Argonauts.
  • The Millennium of the Byzantine Empire
  • Cyprus in the Greek Mythology, History and Culture
  • Great turning points in Greek History.

 

On the panels the visitor may follow the expedition of Alexander the Great and its impact on the world; read a summary of each rhapsody of “The Iliad” and “The Odyssey” – Homer’s great epic poems related to the Trojan War, a story that had a unique influence on Ancient Greek Latin literature as well as the Western culture; poems by Sappho, Pindar and Anacreon; the birth and development of Greek Philosophy; the birth and development of Greek Medicine; The Olympic Games and other Panhellenic Athletic and Music Games; the labours of Hercules and Theseus and the Argonautic Expendition; the birth and development of the Ancient Greek Drama by Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes, Menander; The Millenium of the Byzantine Empire..

The art expressed in the sculptures and the thematic units of Ancient Greece depicted on the panels complement the beauty of nature thus creating a three-faceted entity.

The Garden of Greek Civilisation and Culture of the Damianos Foundation has mainly an educational aim. It is primarily addressed to students presenting them in an attractive and comprehensive way an authentic representation of the Ancient Greek Culture. This heritage is not obsolete. It is contemporary and much alive. The Greek cultural heritage is a Great Ancient Sun and a Contemporary Light. It is an everlasting spring of cultural reminiscence, a precious legacy that remains with its fundamentals, ageless beauty and unique contribution to the Sciences and the Arts, timeless, and immortal.

It is a source of inspiration, instruction and guidance that still appeals in our days, not only within the borders of Greece but world-wide.
